River City Ransom Underground

So it’s no secret that Matt and I love the Kunio-kun games, including River City Ransom. Technōs’s games, including RCR, Double Dragon, Battle Toads, and some of the less common games such as Nekketsu Kakutou Densetsu and Crash N’ The Boys are very dear to our hearts. It’ll be interesting to see how River City Ransom Underground turns out.

We’ve been aware of Ottawa based Conatus Creative‘s licensed take on the franchise since May, and I’m glad to see that they’re finally Kickstarting their project in what looks like will be a successful campaign. I’m a little weary about their mention of having a Nekketsu Kakutou Densetsu style stretch goal as we’ll suddenly see some competition in the gameplay style that we’re building into our game. From the looks of it we’re targeting similar release dates, too. As an indie that’s already invested a lot of time and love into our project, I’d be lying if I didn’t say that direct competition with an established brand name isn’t concerning to me. But hey, if Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat can exist in the same world… well… one of the messages they kept trying to hammer into me at PAX Dev was the idea that indies aren’t in competition with each other. I guess we’ll be putting that to the test.

Anyways, what they’ve shown off on the Kickstarter looks like it’s got a lot of great potential. It’s worth taking the time to check out. I hope the game does well, and I hope that it helps get people psyched for what we’re doing too.
