First Assault

We’ve been working furiously this past week to make progress on Super Hematoma, and despite the amount of work that’s behind the scenes and undemonstratable at this point, we’ve got some great new stuff in the below video to show off!

As I hinted at last Progress Report, after doing a crunch to get animation done last week (make no mistake, there’s still an overwhelming amount left to do), I switched it up for a little and began working at getting some sound effects into the game.

So far, I’ve been using Famitracker to develop the music for the game. One interesting thing about the way sound worked in old games, was that due to the limitations of the sound chip, in order to play a sound effect it would have to interrupt part of the music.  This is a limitation that I don’t particularly feel is necessary to reproduce in our game, nor do I feel that it’s strictly necessary to limit myself to using Famitracker for sound effects just because I’m using it for the music. I do however, really like the lo-fi quality of the sound in old games. Sounds like the jump in Mario are iconic, and so I feel that it would be nice to genrate sounds electronically rather than dragging out the microphone and creating real world sounds. Thus, I decided to start creating sounds using Little Sound DJ, as there’s just something about that sound chip that really sings to me. I felt that it might be a little too harsh for the music of this particular game, but I’m glad to have thought of a way to include that tool.

Not the most intuitive interface, but it sure makes me smile to hear the results.

So, aside from the sound effects, we’ve got a couple more attacks in there, and we’ve now got the ability for you to hit an opponent. Of course you’re both invincible at the moment, so don’t expect to be able to knock anyone out just yet 🙂 But we’re working on it!
